Pop-Culturalist Chats with Natalie Alexander

Pop-Culturalist Chats with Natalie Alexander

By Kevin.

Natalie Alexander is a singer-songwriter on the rise, who recently dropped her own self-titled EP. It’s an artistic statement of self-expression and the perfect introduction to one of music’s great new storytellers. Pop-Culturalist was lucky enough to chat with Natalie about the EP, her creative process, and how her family has shaped her career.

P-C: Describe how you felt when your self-titled EP was finally released.
Natalie: Excited! I had no expectations, I was just so happy to finally get my music out there. The feedback was overwhelmingly positive which just inspired me more. It’s been quite a ride.

P-C: Tell us about your new single, “I Don’t Want To Catch My Breath”.
Natalie: That song was written by my favorite writer in country music, Hillary Lindsey. Recording it was such a great experience—I felt really connected to it and it has such a beautiful message. I’m really looking forward to performing it live because I get to play it on the piano, which will be a really great experience for me.

P-C: What is your creative process like when you’re putting together a new tune?
Natalie: I write a lot in my car. A hook or melody will pop in my head and I’ll sing it into my voice memos to work on later. I’ve pieced together a full song just by doing that. Being able to play it back really helps the process.

P-C: Who are some of your musical influences?
Natalie: Carrie Underwood, Shania Twain, and Taylor Swift.

P-C: You come from a very musically inclined family, how have they influenced your music?
Natalie: My family has had a huge impact on my career. They drive me to be the best musician I can be. Having a talented mom and brothers definitely adds pressure, but they’re so supportive of my music and that’s helped me grow so much. My first experience with the music industry was through managing my brothers’ band. I don’t know where I would be without them.

P-C: Do you have plans to hit the road this year?
Natalie: I’m looking into performance opportunities in the near future! I’ve been contacted by fans all over the country being asked to come play in their state. I’d love an opportunity to do that soon.

P-C: Who is someone you’d love to collaborate with in the future?
Natalie: Brett Young! I love his EP and really want to work with a male artist. Carly Pearce has played a few of his shows and I’m so jealous!
